How To Pass The Lorry or Bus Theory Test (section 1 and 2 of CPC) in 2021

This article is all about how you can become a bus, coach or lorry driver in 2020. We will also cover how to pass the hazard perception test and what type of questions come up in the mock theory test (section 1 and 2)

Remember The test is made up of 3 parts the hazard perception, multiple choice and case studies exam. Both parts can be booked separately but you can have both exams on the same day to get your lorry, bus or coach licence.

1. What is part 1a of the certificate of profesional conduct (CPC) theory test?

Multiple-choice questions

You have 1 hour and 55 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions. You will need 85/100 to pass your exam.

Before the driving theory test starts you’ll get:

  1. Instructions on how the test works
  2. The chance to do some practice questions to get used to the screens

How the theory test works:

There are 100 questions and you need 85/100 to pass the exam. A question and several possible answers appear on a screen. You have to select the right answer.

The questions are taken from each of these 15 categories:

  1. Vehicle weights and dimensions
  2. Drivers’ hours and rest periods
  3. Braking systems
  4. The driver
  5. The road
  6. Incidents
  7. Vehicle condition
  8. Leaving the vehicle
  9. Vehicle loading
  10. Restricted view
  11. Essential documents
  12. Environmental issues
  13. Other road users
  14. Road and traffic signs
  15. Vehicle loading

2. What does part 1b of the hazard perception test include?

Hazard Perception Test

You’ll then watch 14 video clips. The clips will all have 1 hazard in them except for 1 clip which will have 2 hazards. You will need to score 44/75 to pass this exam. 

What should I be clicking on for the Hazard Perception test?

There are 7 vulnerable road users and 3 different types of vehicles. As long as you click on these you will get points:

7 Vulnerable Road Users:

  1. Elderly drivers
  2. Pedestrians
  3. New drivers
  4. Children
  5. Animals
  6. Cyclists
  7. Motorcyclists

3 other types of vehicles:

  1. Lorrys and Buses
  2. Trams
  3. Motorcyclists

3. What is part 2 of the certificate of professional conduct (CPC) case studies test?

Case Studies Test

On the computer, you will have 7 case studies with multiple-choice questions. The case studies are stories based on situations you will encounter as a lorry, coach or bus driver.

There will be 6-8 multiple-choice questions in each case study. The test is for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40/50.

4. How much does the test cost?

The costs of the exams:

  1. Part 1a is £26 for multiple choice questions
  2. Part 1b is £11 for the hazard perception
  3. Part 2 is £23 for case studies

5. Where, when and how can I book an exam?

Where can I sit the exams:

The exam centre will be the closest to your postcode.

When can I sit an exam?

Exam bookings are usually available within 1 month. You will need to go onto the booking website to find the latest dates and times.

What documents will I need to book the exam?

You will need your provisional licence, email and credit card to book these exams. If you do not have a provisional licence you can apply for one here.

6. How much time should I spend revising the driving theory test?

As a teacher who has been helping students pass their exams since 2013, I would recommend you spend the following time spent on revision:

1. 15 hours revising 15 mock exams (each exam is 100 questions which are 1,500 questions in total)
2. 1 hour on hazard perception 
3. 4 hours on case studies
